While in Asia, Africa and parts of South-America it's been a norm for decades, now more and more people of western countries start to try different insects. There are more than 1.900 edible species. The most popular insects are grasshoppers, crickets, caterpillars, ants and termites. With more than enough reasons to try insects, which one would you like to taste first?

Grasshoppers
Love at first sight? For many, yes! Grasshoppers are one of the most popular edible insects. Grasshoppers are high in protein and low in carbohydrates and have a walnut-taste. They can be added as a topping on pizza or pasta, in stews or wok dishes. Before to eat them, you have to remove wings and legs.

​Mealworms
Mealworms are the best option if you want to try your very first insect. Mealworms are crunchy, have a light walnut-taste and are an important source of protein. They can easily be added to salads, wraps and on savoury and sweet dishes. Or, you can just enjoy them as a snack. Bye peanuts, hello mealworms!

​Black Ants
​As little as they are, black ants make a big impression. These ants smell like bacon and have a slightly acidic and sour taste. Black ants are also high in protein. It's ideal to use in salads, but also in wok dishes. Uncooked ants are prickly, but after stirring them in oil, they are a perfect addition to your dish.

​Termites are one of the most populair insect species. Termites are an important food source because they are high in protein. Termite queens can even live up to 50 years, which makes them one of the longest living insects on earth. You can try termites just as a snack, or you can add them to salads. Termites have a crunchy bite and have a earthy taste.

​While silkworm pupaes have a crunchy exterior and softer interior, they taste a bit like mashed potato, pollen of flours and a little like black sea snails. Chinese Amor tail scorpions are used in traditional Chinese medicines for a long time. Now also the rest of the world finds out that they are safe (!) and healthy to eat. These small scorpions are high in protein and perfect to impress your guests while having a cocktail together.

While the name itself can give you chills, their taste is to die for. Their claws are hard and crunchy, their outside body is crunchy and their inside more soft. Their taste is a resemblance of shrimps and lobster. These scorpions are high in protein, calcium and vitamins and they are completely safe to eat. Really, we are still alive.
